Formulas
Arithmetic, not physiology-as-prescription. At 0% incline, belt mph is the same running as outdoor mph — same mile as the pace converter. With incline, ACSM running VO2 estimates a harder outdoor equivalent. This is not a branded training table.
- mph = 60 ÷ minutes per mile · km/h = 60 ÷ minutes per km
- VO2 = 0.2 × speed (m/min) + 0.9 × speed × grade + 3.5
- MET = VO2 / 3.5
- Outdoor speed = (VO2 − 3.5) / 0.2
- 1 mile = 1.609344 km

FAQ
What pace is 6.35 mph on a treadmill?
6.35 mph is 9:27 per mile, or 5:52 per kilometer (10.22 km/h), at 0% incline. Same numbers as the pace converter. Live update, no Calculate button.
How does treadmill incline change pace?
This page uses the ACSM running VO2 equation. Grade adds 0.9 × belt speed × grade to level VO2. The giant readout is the outdoor (0%) pace with the same VO2. At 1%, a 9:27/mi belt is about 9:03/mi outdoors.
Is treadmill mph the same as outdoor mph?
Belt speed in mph is the number on the console. At 0% incline it matches outdoor mph. With incline, outdoor equivalent pace is faster than the belt because the grade costs extra oxygen.
What incline chips can I use?
0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, and 10 percent. 0% is a flat belt. The 1% setting is a common indoor stand-in for outdoor running; this page still uses ACSM VO2, not a branded training table.
Is this medical advice?
No. It converts belt speed and grade with ACSM running arithmetic. It is not a lab test, a calorie prescription, or clearance to exercise.
