How it works

Arithmetic, not physiology. Distance is locked at 50.000 km (31.07 mi). Pace = time / distance. This is even 50K pace, not race-equivalence. Negative split runs the first 25K 3% slower and the last 25K 3% faster. Run-walk solves for the running pace that keeps the same average when every 10 minutes holds 9:00 of running and 1:00 of walking at 16:00/mi, so every split clock is unchanged. For a marathon→50K estimate, use the race time predictor (Riegel). This page does not clone VDOT or McMillan tables.

  • pace = time / 50.000 km
  • 50K = 50.000 km = 31.0686 mi
  • run pace = 9:00 / (10:00 / pace − 1:00 / walk pace)

FAQ

What pace is a 5:30 50K?

A 5:30:00 50K is 10:37 per mile, or 6:36 per kilometer, at even pace (5.65 mph · 9.09 km/h). Every 5 km ticks by on a 33:00 clock, the marathon mark comes at 4:38:29, and the finish is 5:30:00. Distance is locked at 50.000 km (31.07 mi). There is no Calculate button; pace updates live.

How many miles is a 50K?

A 50K is 50.000 kilometers, which is 31.0686 international miles (1 mile = 1.609344 km). That is about 4.9 miles (7.8 km) past the marathon. Trail 50Ks are often a little long or short of 50.000 km, so check the course's own distance before you print splits.

How long does a first 50K take?

On a flat road or path, a common first-50K range is roughly 5 to 7 hours (about 9:39 to 13:31 per mile). Trail 50Ks with real climbing usually take much longer — often 20–50% more than a road 50K for the same runner, and more on technical or mountain courses. Use the course's past results at your marathon level as the best guide.

Should I run-walk a 50K?

Many first-time 50K finishers do. Pick a cycle before the race and start it from the first mile. With Run-walk selected, SplitLab shows the running pace that keeps your goal average: for a 5:30:00 50K, running 9:00 and walking 1:00 at a brisk 16:00/mi means running about 10:14/mi (6:22/km). Your clocks at each 5 km mark stay the same as even pace. On trail courses, power-hiking the climbs is the most common walk break.

How does my marathon time translate to a 50K?

Riegel's formula (T2 = T1 × (D2/D1)^1.06) turns a 4:00 marathon into a 4:47:18 road 50K and a 4:30 marathon into 5:23:13. Treat that as a best case on a flat course. Aid-station stops, walking, heat, and trail terrain usually add time. Most first-timers finish well slower than Riegel predicts. This page does not use VDOT or McMillan tables. Try other races on the race time predictor.

How many gels do I need for a 50K?

At 60 g of carbs per hour, a 5:30:00 50K is about 330 g, or 14 gels of 25 g. That is the fueling calculator's Auto setting for races of 2.5 hours and longer. Many ultra runners mix gels with real food and drink mix from aid stations. Practice your plan in long training runs. This is not medical advice.
