Step length is one footstrike. Stride length is two steps. Speed is the same running as the pace converter. Belt speed lives on the treadmill pace calculator. Not medical or coaching advice.

Formulas
Arithmetic, not physiology. Speed is distance over time. Cadence is how often the feet land. Step length is metres per footstrike; stride length is two steps. This page does not clone VDOT, McMillan, or any proprietary table.
- speed_m_s = 1609.344 / pace_sec_per_mile
- speed_m_s = 1000 / pace_sec_per_km
- step_length_m = speed_m_s / (cadence_spm / 60)
- cadence_spm = speed_m_s × 60 / step_length_m
- stride_length_m = 2 × step_length_m
- mph = 60 / pace_min_per_mile
- 1 mile = 1.609344 km
180 SPM is not a universal target. Jack Daniels counted many elite men near 180 at 5K race effort — an observation in Daniels' Running Formula, not a cadence everyone should hold on an easy run. Optional +5% / +10% rows follow the idea of step-rate drills (Heiderscheit et al., 2011, Med Sci Sports Exerc) as practice targets at the same pace, not prescriptions.

FAQ
What is running cadence in SPM?
Cadence is steps per minute — how often your feet hit the ground. At 9:27 per mile and 170 SPM, speed is 6.35 mph and step length is about 1.00 m (39.4 in). There is no Calculate button; SPM updates live.
Step length vs stride length?
Step length is the distance per footstrike (one step). Stride length is two steps — the same foot to the same foot. This calculator labels both so they are not mixed up. Default 9:27/mi at 170 SPM is ~1.00 m step and ~2.00 m stride.
How do I get cadence from pace?
Speed in metres per second is 1609.344 divided by seconds per mile (or 1000 divided by seconds per kilometre). Cadence in SPM is speed × 60 ÷ step length in metres. Or pick a cadence and read step length at that pace.
Is 180 SPM the right running cadence?
No. 180 steps per minute is a myth as a universal target. Jack Daniels observed many elite men near 180 at 5K race effort — an observation, not a prescription for every runner or every pace. Easy runs are often slower. Use your own SPM at a known pace, then optional +5% / +10% practice targets if you are experimenting. Not coaching advice.
Should I shorten my stride?
This page does not diagnose overstride. Optional height shows step length as a fraction of stature; many easy-run step lengths sit near ~0.4–0.5 of height. That is ratio guidance only, not medical or coaching advice. The +5% / +10% row keeps the same pace and shortens the step — practice targets, not a treatment plan.
