How it works

Arithmetic, not physiology. Distance is locked at 50 miles (80.47 km). Pace = time / distance, and the time includes every aid-station stop, so it is your average pace, not your moving pace. This is even 50 mile pace, not race-equivalence. Negative split runs the first 25 miles 3% slower and the last 25 miles 3% faster. Run-walk solves for the running pace that keeps the same average when every 5 minutes holds 4:00 of running and 1:00 of walking at 16:00/mi, so every split clock is unchanged. For a 50K→50 mile estimate, use the race time predictor (Riegel), and expect it to be optimistic. This page does not clone VDOT or McMillan tables.

  • pace = time / 50 mi
  • 50 mi = 80.4672 km
  • run pace = 4:00 / (5:00 / pace − 1:00 / walk pace)

FAQ

What pace is an 11-hour 50 mile?

An 11:00:00 50 mile is 13:12 per mile, or 8:12 per kilometer, at even pace (4.55 mph · 7.32 km/h). Halfway (25 mi) comes at 5:30:00, the marathon mark at 5:46:05, the 50K mark at 6:50:06, and every 10 miles ticks by on a 2:12:00 clock. Distance is locked at 50 miles (80.47 km). There is no Calculate button; pace updates live.

How many kilometers is 50 miles?

50 miles is 80.4672 kilometers (1 mile = 1.609344 km). That is about 18.9 miles (30.5 km) past a 50K and almost twice a marathon. Trail 50 milers are often a little long or short, so check the course's own distance before you print splits.

How long does a 50 mile race take?

It depends far more on the course than on the distance. On flat, runnable courses, many finishers land somewhere around 9 to 13 hours (about 10:48 to 15:36 per mile). Mountain 50 milers with big climbing often take much longer. Check your race's cutoff and past results at your 50K level before you pick a goal.

Does the pace include aid-station stops?

Yes. The pace here is your average over the whole 50 miles, stops included, because that is what the clock measures. If you plan to spend 30 minutes total at aid stations in an 11-hour race, your moving time is 10:30:00, so you need about 12:36 per mile (7:50 per km) while moving. Type the moving time into the box to see that pace and its splits.

Should I run-walk a 50 mile?

Most 50 mile finishers walk some of it, and many plan it from the start. With Run-walk selected, SplitLab shows the running pace that keeps your goal average: for an 11:00:00 50 mile, running 4:00 and walking 1:00 at a brisk 16:00/mi means running about 12:39/mi (7:51/km). Your clocks at every mile and checkpoint stay the same as even pace. On trail courses, power-hiking the climbs is the most common walk break.

How does my 50K time translate to a 50 mile?

Riegel's formula (T2 = T1 × (D2/D1)^1.06) turns a 5:00 50K into an 8:16:47 50 mile and a 5:30 50K into 9:06:28. That is a best case on a flat course, and at this distance it is usually very optimistic: night sections, aid stops, walking, heat, and terrain add a lot of time. This page does not use VDOT or McMillan tables. Try other races on the race time predictor.

How many gels do I need for a 50 mile?

At 60 g of carbs per hour, an 11:00:00 50 mile is about 660 g, or 27 gels of 25 g. That is the fueling calculator's Auto setting for races of 2.5 hours and longer. Over 8 to 13 hours most runners mix gels with real food and drink mix from aid stations. Practice your plan in long training runs. This is not medical advice.
