How it works

Arithmetic, not physiology. Lap time = pace × lap distance. Lane 1 of a standard outdoor track is 400 m. Lanes are 1.22 m wide, so each lane outward runs both bends on a bigger radius and adds 2π × 1.22 m ≈ 7.67 m per lap. A mile is 4.02336 laps of lane 1. In Race goal mode the pace is your goal time divided by the race distance — even pace, not a prediction. For a race-to-race estimate use the race time predictor (Riegel). This page does not clone VDOT or McMillan tables.

  • lap (s) = pace (s/mi) × 400 / 1609.344
  • lane n lap = 400 + 2π × 1.22 × (n − 1) m
  • 1 mile = 1609.344 m = 4.02336 laps
  • 1 km = 2.5 laps

FAQ

What is the 400 m lap time for 8:00 mile pace?

8:00 per mile is a 1:59.3 lap of a standard 400 m track (lane 1), or 4:58 per kilometer. That is 29.8 per 100 m, 59.7 per 200 m, 3:58.6 per 800 m, and 7:57.2 for 1600 m. Results update live; there is no Calculate button.

How many laps of a track is a mile?

4.02336 laps. A mile is 1609.344 m and lane 1 is 400 m, so 1609.344 / 400 = 4.02336. Four laps (1600 m) is 9.344 m short of a full mile — about 2.8 s at 8:00 per mile.

How much farther is a lap in lane 8?

Each lane outward adds about 7.67 m per lap (2π × 1.22 m lane width), so lane 8 is about 453.7 m. At 8:00 per mile that turns a 1:59.3 lane 1 lap into a 2:15.3 lap in lane 8. Stay in lane 1 for workouts unless the track asks otherwise.

Can I enter a race goal instead of a pace?

Yes. Switch to Race goal, pick 1500 m, mile, 3K, 5K, or 10K, and type a goal time. A 25:00 5K is 8:03 per mile and an even 2:00.0 lap. This is even-pace arithmetic, not VDOT or McMillan, and not a race predictor.
